I was privileged to be a part of a great team also known as the “Big Five” on 10-day mission trip to Kenya in November 2017. We were received by the Boon family who accorded us top notch hospitality. Our theme was, “Happy Birthday Jesus” or “Christmas Story” at the Ark School located in the slum of Kariobangi.
About 97 percent of the kids in this elementary school are Muslims of the Borona tribe. The VBS was a success story beginning with the Wise men, Joseph and Mary with the angels’ visitations and finally the birth of Jesus.
The most humbling experience was the willingness the kids had to learn more about Jesus and even engage in singing Christian hymns, reciting memory verses despite their religious background and coloring the pictorials of each day.
I was touched by the outstanding incident when one of the team members told this little girl how she was a diamond in the eyes of God. She did understanding the meaning initially. The following day, she was told the same thing statement and this time responded with a question; “do you mean like gold?”
Upon acknowledging “Yes,” to her question, the girl presented with a beautiful smile. The words of hope stirred her heart and I do believe that her life will never be the same.
Such memories and seeing the hunger that the kids have for Jesus portrayed with asking us to stay longer are a great inspiration of our trip to Kenya.
God confirmed to me how passionate He is with us fulfilling Matthew 28: 19-20. And it’s my daily prayer that the Lord continues to avail opportunities to witness the gospel beyond Grace Community Church.
I can’t stop thanking the Lord for the diligent men and women that I served with in Kenya and the entire Beyond mission team that orchestrated the trip. May the Lord grant favor and increase for your labor in the vineyard.
