At the Beyond Trips Info Session on February 5, you had the opportunity to learn about Grace’s short-term missions trips in 2017. You learned practical information about the applications and more about how you can live the Gospel side by side with people around the world. Better yet, you heard stories from individuals who have gone on trips in the past.
Here’s a snapshot of Adam Foote’s story from his trip to Uganda…
How did you know God was calling you to go on a short-term mission trip?
My girlfriend (now wife) had just returned from her first trip to Kenya and was a very different person (for the better) than when she had left. After a few weeks of very deep conversations, tough conversations, and prayer, it was obvious God was calling both of us to return to Africa together. We went to Uganda 10 months later.
What was the most memorable experience on your trip?
There were SO many, but if I had to pick just one, it would be meeting Reagan. Reagan was a little boy about 8 years old that I immediately bonded with and ended up getting to spend a lot of time with over the next two weeks. We played soccer together, read scripture together, ate together, and I had the opportunity to visit his home and interview him and his family.
What was the biggest surprise of your trip?
There were two really big surprises. One, my girlfriend, Brittany, and I were on this trip together and we had grown an incredible amount over that past year, especially while on this trip to Uganda. While on an assignment in the village, God surprised me by making it wildly obvious that we were to get married. I proposed to her a month after we got home, and we were married a year later. Two, the actuality of reverse-culture shock. I had no idea it would impact me so greatly, and the first month back in the states created a strong mix of emotions inside me.
How has your short-term missional experience impacted your daily life and/or your faith?
Greatly. [My wife and I] both now sponsor a couple children with AOET Uganda and have become proud advocates of AOET and the work Grace is doing alongside of them. We also felt called to be more involved in the work Grace is doing there and had an incredible opportunity to become leaders for short-term trips to Uganda.
What advice would you give to someone who is considering going on a short-term mission trip?
Stop considering it. Put aside your doubt, fear, and worry – trust God and just go.
