As part of Missions Month, we’ve arranged a book drive for our partner schools. Wondering what impact your donation has? Check out this story from our Executive Director of Impact, Rena Tolson:
Meet my friend Susan Brown. Sue is the principal of one of our partner schools, Laurel Woods Elementary School, and we had the opportunity to meet Sue through Julie Peterson, our Beyond Local Coordinator. A few years ago I visited Sue to find out more about their needs at the school and how we could better partner with them. While we were meeting, Sue shared with me that not all Howard County schools were the same and that their school had many needs, stemming from single-parent homes to literacy challenges and poverty. It was during our meeting that we dreamed about a book drive project to bless the students and the teachers. This will be our fourth year donating hundreds of books to bless our partner schools.
While squeezing in that meeting years ago, I recall that Sue was gathering her things together to head out to the airport. She was flying out to be with a family member in the middle of a crisis. Taking that bold move to walk Side by Side with Sue, I asked how I could pray for her. She shared the details of their situation and poured out her heart. We prayed. This is what our partnerships are all about – we are about relationships, not just handouts. We want to support our schools while we care for and get to know their leaders and their stories.
As we planned for this year’s book drive for Missions Month, this is what Sue shared:
Laurel Woods Elementary has been blessed by the generosity of the Grace Church community. Your contributions of books have filled our classrooms with literature to entertain, teach and inspire our children. This year our goal is to send books home with our students so that they can continue their love of reading outside of school. So many of our children do not have access to books in their own homes. The gift of a book is such a valued possession that opens up the imagination and encourages dreams. Our staff promises HOPE while our children promise EFFORT. Please join us in empowering our children to see HOPE in our world and the promise of a bright future.
Our book drive for our partner schools and our program at Captivate Church will continue throughout the month of February. Please bring in books, new or gently-used, for elementary-aged children. Chapter books are welcome, and oftentimes they have age or grade reading level marked on the book.
Please select books that can bring God’s light to our schools. Choose books that have interesting themes and focus on: animals, colors, numbers, learning, how to create, how things work, creation, etc.
Please avoid titles and covers that depict scary themes.
